I love it – I’ve shown it to all my students and they too admire the depth and feeling in the work. Congratulations on all counts.
Lynne Edwards, author, The Sampler Quilt Book, UK.

I want to congratulate you on your wonderful book! I had such an enjoyable time reading it (from cover to cover!). I just loved the poetry of the words, to say nothing of the beautiful, gorgeous pictures of the quilts. It flowed so well...the way you laid it out, the chronology and the themes; it was warm and personal - I loved taking my time on every page. Thanks for bringing a few "riches" into my life!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been savouring your book each morning with my coffee. I can't begin to tell you how much I've been enjoying it. The detail on how the quilts are made, information on your life and history of Nova Scotia that until now I did not know, all in one book is just fantastic. I know the two of you must have spent many hours producing this volume and I must say it was a truly worthwhile endeavour.

I wish you great success!

Best wishes,
Betty Chun

Laurie, I just finished reading/studying your latest book.  It was a little strange hearing about and seeing Nova Scotia's scenes.  It was as though a distant memory had been awakened.  You see, I am a descendent of those expelled Acadians.  My forebears made it to Louisiana where they flourished, even while hiding from the British in the swamps. If we had stayed in Acadie, you and I might have been neighbors!

As for your book, it is WONDERFUL.  Congratulations!

Thank you so much for sending me "Rags to Riches" It is a wonderful and inspiring Book. I shall treasure it. I first saw Laurie's work in the Kitchener-Waterloo area several years ago and was so impressed. I have been a Quilter for many years and have in the past year ventured into Landscapes myself. I am having fun enhancing my wall-hangings with paints and crayons but I am just a beginner in this field.

I wish you many more years of creative masterpieces.

It was a pleasure meeting you at SOFA Expo Chicago. I have read your wonderful book from cover to cover, very much enjoying your images and the descriptions of the pieces and how the work was accomplished. I appreciated reading the history of your work's evolution - it's  wonderful when you can combine such talent and artistry with community involvement and purpose. I have never seen quilts like yours - they are so vibrant and creative and spirit filled; they really draw the viewer's attention. I have shared your book with friends and given one as a gift - all have sung your praises!  I am very glad to know about your work and wish you continued success and joy in making your art.

She is an inspiration! I have read and re-read her book.

I have had tears in my eyes for the past two days as I slowly read your wonderful new book, "Rags to Riches". I found it extremely moving as well as beautiful. I was particularly moved by the Community Built Quilts section. I lived near Hogg's Hollow at the time of that disaster in 1960 and had just had my first child. I remember thinking how awful for her to lose her father so senselessly. I also didn't know that you have had a bout of cancer. I'm hoping you have recovered and that you have many more fruitful and happy years making your beautiful and meaningful quilts. I remember the schoolroom we worked in on Dovercourt (or Dufferin) and the wonderfully creative and inspired times we had there.

Sincerely,

Wendy

I enjoyed your new book Rags to Riches, as I told you earlier I am trying to capture my memories of growing up on my grandpa's farm your book has given me some ideas. I enjoyed reading your explanations of your quilts, that really makes them come to life.

Rags to Riches is excellent. I am amazed at the social themes, support for workers, support for grieving families, the reaching out -- you guys do some very special things.

Really enjoyed your book, a source of creativity and inspiration. Your first book was one of the ones I remember when I started quilting. I believe you were living in Toronto at the time.

I purchased your book and have read it cover to cover!!  I live in Sackville New Brunswick  (home of Mount A) and went to school with the Coleville children . I love Mr. Colville's work and once stood in his studio… your work has definitely inspired me.

Thank you,
Gail

Laurie, I wanted to tell you how much I am enjoying your book. I received my copy yesterday and read every word. The pictures are beautiful and moving. I plan to go back and thoroughly devour every detail of the quilts. I appreciate learning about the thought processes that go on in the artist's mind when creating. It surprised me when you said you added the female figure in At the End of the Day to avoid a sinister feeling in the scene. To be honest, I hadn't noticed her. I love the quilt because it reminds me of the old neighborhoods of my youth and those are happy memories--nothing sinister about them. A reflection of what the viewer brings to the piece...I felt your frustration regarding The Life Quilt and the fact it hasn't reached your vision for it. I am guessing that it's all related to the
fact that it deals with an issue that is current. There are people in power who could and should be held accountable for the loss of these young people's lives. They don't want any attention brought to that fact. Everyone is trying to avoid looking at the pink elephant in the room. Something would have to change. Your other community projects that dealt with tragedies in the past are more readily embraced I believe because they ARE in the past, and blame and guilt, if there are any, are attached to people long gone. One final word--Jacob is a hunk! And his grin is just like yours.

Laurie, thank you for sharing so much of yourself in your book.

Dear Laurie and Larry,

It's come, hot off the press, and I've read it this afternoon with great excitement and a full heart. How wonderful your writing is, and how well served you are by Mary Pratt's splendid introduction and your (Larry's) glorious reproductions and the whole sense of the story (to this point) of your work!! I've been anticipating this all summer and couldn't have imagined a more beautiful gem.

Best to you both from us both,

Marie,

Laurie and Larry,

The books arrived late last week and it is beautiful, a real treasure. It speaks volumes about your love of your work and your (new) home, and the importance of showing both in the best light possible. It is an honour to have met you and to have learned from you, Laurie. I continue to use your techniques, to the best of my ability, in my own work and I still receive compliments for the little piece I did in your class at Quilt Canada in Ottawa.

Thank you for creating this most recent book. I will use it to take me home when I need a dose of salt air and down home goodness.

Best Regards,

Margaret
